Bouncing off clouds- Tori Amos

So I have no idea what blogging is really…. I guess I kind of found this site off of a TA of mine’s email and thought it was kind of cool (sounds a little stalkerish when I read that, but thats okay.) Back in the day I was really into website stuff; I had accounts at CalgaryPlanet.com, MySpace.com, Nexopia.com, etc. My pictures were up everywhere and I loved to say random shit and look trendy, like every high school girl out there. Then I hit university where I had no time to even read a book that didn’t involved school, so all social life on the net went out the window. If you’re curious, look me up on ..kandy4.. on nexopia. Its like a snapshot of me in high school and I leave it as I used to have it so I can look at it and smile.

Tori Amos

Speaking of back in the day, I guess the most important thing I can say right now is the fact that I saw Tori Amos live two days ago. Who is that, you’re asking– well I’ve given you a great song in my title to go buy off iTunes for $0.99 and find out exactly who she is. This woman’s music essentially is the soundtrack of my life, starting from the day my parents went out and bought her cd “Boys for Pele”. I was in grade 3 (or 4?) and we went on a road trip down to Utah from Calgary in our Volvo stationwagon. There are only a few things I remember from that trip: a really old tree hanging off the Zion Canyon, tumbleweeds getting caught in my pants, winning a drawing contest at a roadside restaurant and listening to “Boys for Pele” endlessly. I guess from then I was hooked on her music… I have continously bought her cds as soon as they have come out, I ravenously collect her B-sides, I own all her interviews, books and DVDs and most imporantly, I have now seen her live in concert. In short, I think I own the most envious collection of Tori Amos out there. I refuse to share any of her music on any music sharers and I won’t give out her cds easily because I think she should earn every royalty from every second of her songs.

 Tumbleweed

Slightly obsessive? Maybe, but damn her music is good.  So I’ll ask you, if anyone is actually reading this, do you have an artist that soundtracks your life? The kind of music that if you ever hear those songs again it reminds you of roadtrips, Christmas parties, embarassing moments in high school or smoking pot in a ravine and getting caught by your city mayor jogging in mini shorts? (odd example? True story. *wink*) Yeah, Music is an incredible thing. Its amazing how many memories you can pull up with a sound. The brain is so weird in how it works….

Which brings me to the 2nd thing about me that you might want to know: I love the brain. Yeah, thats exactly what I wrote…. I love the brain and its all its weird workings. This is what I study in school and what I consistently do well in. Maybe one day you will be looking up at me as your neurosurgeon and I’m doing surgery on IN your head while asking “Do you feel that sensation in your knee?” and you’re kicking it without thinking about it. No, I don’t have any desire to be Hannibal, but I am really interested in neurology. I have so many questions I wish I knew about the brain: What are Alzheimer plaques? Why do smells and sounds trigger memories? Why is it that we can cut cingulate bundles for OCD? What causes epilepsy? Do parts of people’s brain go inactive during a dissociative fugue? Can we trick people with somatoform disorders by giving them placebo medication? Of course, this all may sound like gibberish to you if you’re not in psych, but they are cool questions. Or I’m a complete nerd, which is perfectly acceptable too.

So I guess I’ve covered 2 important things about me that you didn’t know before: I’m obsessed about Tori Amos and I love the brain. Thats two things about me that are pretty important and I think thats enough for today.
